Kabir suman born in 1950 in Cuttack, Odisha, started taking lessons in music at an early age, became a regular broadcaster of Modern Bengali Songs and Tagore Songs from All India Radio, Kolkata at age eighteen. His first gramophone disk (45 RPM) of Tagore songs was issued by INRECO, Calcutta in 1972 and the second in 1973.
The first collection of his songs, ‘Tomake Chai’ was brought out by Sa Re Ga Ma (then Gramophone Company of India). It was an instant hit and it brought him a Gold Disk in 1993. He received the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Award (BFJA) for ‘Sedin Chaitro Mas’, directed by Pravat Roy. He got the National Film Award (Rajat Kamal) as the Best Music Director for Srijit Mukherjee’s film ‘Jaatishwar’, 2014. In 2018 the Kalyani university, West Bengal, gave him an Honorary D.Litt. for his contribution to music and literature.
